The International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (IADR) has announced Professor Finbarr Allen as the 2026 recipient of the IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Behavioural, Epidemiologic, and Health Services Research. Professor Allen, from University College Cork, was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the 104th General Session of the IADR, which was held in conjunction with the 55th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research and the 50th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research on March 25-28, 2026 in San Diego, CA, USA.

Congratulations to Professor Finbarr Allen who is the 2026 recipient of the IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Behavioural, Epidemiologic, and Health Services Research

Professor Allen has been an officer of the IADR Geriatric Oral Research Group and other IADR Scientific Research Groups for many years. He currently serves as a Professor and Consultant in Oral Rehabilitation & Restorative Dentistry at University College Cork, Ireland. His research centres on enhancing the quality of life for the elderly, with a particular emphasis on evaluating the outcomes of interventions related to health-related quality of life, oral comfort, and nutrition.

Congratulations to Dr Claire Curtin, Specialist/Lecturer in Special Care Dentistry, who has been awarded Second Place in the Senior Clinical category of the Hatton Award at the International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (IADR) General Session, held in San Diego from 25–28 March 2026.

Congratulation to Dr Claire Curtin, Specialist/Lecturer in Special Care Dentistry,

Claire’s award-winning research, “Oral Health and Care Practices in an Irish Residential Facility,” was recognised for its strong clinical relevance and contribution to the field. Her research was supervised by Professor Martina Hayes (UCC), Professor Gerry McKenna (QUB) and Dr Francis Burke (UCC), with additional contributions from Dr Danielle McGeown and Dr Elizabeth Moloney. The Hatton Award is an international competition that recognises excellence among early-career researchers in dental science and attracts exceptional candidates from leading institutions worldwide. Claire’s achievement reflects both the quality of her work and its impact within a highly competitive field. She represented the Irish Division at the General Session, having previously won the Irish Division Postgraduate Research Award in Barcelona in June 2025. This success highlights the strength of ongoing research in Special Care Dentistry and is a proud achievement for both Claire and her supervisors.

The Cork University Dental School and Hospital, University College Cork, hosted a highly engaging and well received Continuing Education Seminar for Dental Nurses, Dental Hygienists, and all members of the Dental Team on February 21st.

From registration through to the final session, the seminar maintained strong attendance and enthusiastic participation, reflecting the appetite for continued learning and clinical excellence within all members of the dental team.
